For those familiar with iOS, Apple’s iPadOS changes a few things, including how the mobile operating system handles widgets. Here’s how to manage widgets on iPadOS.

Apple has finally split iOS between the iPhone and iPad, creating iPadOS for the company’s popular line of tablets. While the new operating system isn’t remarkably different from iOS, there are a few interesting changes that might entice you to upgrade, including widgets.

Android has long supported widgets; iOS has them too, but you must swipe right and then scroll down to reach them. With Today View on iPadOS, the widget panel is front and center on the homescreen. Here’s how to customize that view.

Navigate Today View

Control the Today View panel with a series of subtle gestures that are easy to overlook. Scroll up and down in the widget panel to move between the different widgets set to the home page. Individual widgets can then be entered with a tap.

If you want to remove the panel from view, swipe down on Today View but keep your finger on the screen. Today View should be replaced by a blank spot. If you pinned any widgets, they will remain while the rest of Today View disappears. Bring the full panel back by swiping up where the panel used to be.

If you don’t want to see Today View at all, scroll to the bottom of the widget panel and select Edit. Here you can toggle the switch next to Keep on Home Screen.

Now when you swipe to the left, the Today View panel will disappear completely and the remaining apps will fill in the space. Bring the panel back at any time by swiping to the right.

Manage Widgets

If you want to change the widgets listed in the panel, scroll down to the bottom and tap Edit. Add widgets by tapping the green plus sign next to each listing in the More Widgets section. Any items you add will be listed in the Favorites section.

Available widgets include Apple’s Calendar, Mail, Music, News, Notes, Reminders, Shortcuts, and TV apps. Third-party widgets are also available from Chrome, Firefox, Google Maps, Outlook, and others.

Once widgets have been added to your list of Favorites, they can be moved around to determine their order in Today View. Hold down on the hamburger icon and drag the widgets into the proper order.

If you want to remove an item from favorites, tap the red minus icon, then tap Remove. Or drag them down to More Widgets.

Pin Favorite Widgets

A major addition to the widget system for iPadOS is the ability to pin a widget in place at the top of Today View.

In the Edit screen, drag a widget from the Favorites section up to Pinned Favorites. If there are multiple items in Pinned Favorites, you can use the hamburger icon to change their order in Today View.

Once you have widgets pinned, you will be able to swipe down on Today View from the homescreen, and these items will remain at the top of the screen.
