The biggest release of the year is done and so is the biggest premier. We’ve had our Marvel mania and Hotstar sessions but, it’s time to move on because soon, it’s gonna be May! Welcome to the real game, the challenge of figuring out what to do when two of the biggest battles are done with and a large gaping space is left between now and a post-Avengers:Endgame and ‘Battle of Winterfell’ world. There’s going to be a brief grieving period as we go through the five stages of loss (we’re a very invested bunch) and once we’re done with that, what’s next?

We are going to need some major fuel to bounce back and get right into nerding out on the upcoming moments in entertainment. As we grapple with this reality, the seasoned binge-watcher seeks a newer ground to explore film and TV. Luckily for us, there are a bunch of film releases and TV show seasons to smooth over the month’s emptiness.

We’re curating a definitive guide for the month of May and it has everything we’re watching. Scroll through to add fresh (and recurring) titles to your binge-watching list:

Films

Detective Pikachu – Release Date: May 10

This is officially the biggest release of the year, fight me! Detective Pikachu will give Pokémon fans (which by the way is one of the largest fandoms) the live action film they’ve always been waiting for. Our favourite Pokémon are about to recreate some iconic battles and have all new adventures in the modern day and if that’s not enough to get you excited, check out Pikachu in that cute little detective hat.

Watch if: You ever tuned in to see new episodes of the anime after school!

Aladdin – Release Date: May 24

Aladdin is the other live action adaptation we are very (read:very) curious to see. Will Smith will play one of the most debated versions of the Genie in the classic fairy tale. Disney is really stretching it with this one as the attempt to serve nostalgia with a side of cultural appropriation stands on a dicey plane. That aside, it will be fun to watch the fantastical tale play itself out on screen.

Watch if: You’re dying to see a reboot of a Disney film you loved as a child!

John Wick 3 – Release Date: May 17

The assassin fueled by the motive for revenge, a vendetta to kill for his wife and his dog is coming back on screen for one final chapter. And, its going to be action-packed just like its predecessors. John Wick has to make it out alive in spite of the huge bounty on his head and who doesn’t want to see Keanu Reeves effortlessly rip apart a sea of enemies?

Watch if: Keanu Reeves in action is one of the most precious things on the screen.

The Sun Is Also a Star – Release Date: May 17

This is the film you turn to when you need a wholesome bitter-sweet drama. Two hopeless romantics have you brace themselves for a separation. If that doesn’t have heartache and crying into an ice cream tub written all over it, we don’t know what does. Starring Riverdale’s Charles Melton, the film is going to be a classic tear-jerker.

Watch if: You loved Riverdale and Netflix so much, you could picture the cast in every film ever

Godzilla: King Of Monsters – Release Date: 31 May

Godzilla has had several adaptations over the years, each one filled with the dramatic destruction sequences. Keeping up with the legacy of the Japanese series, this film is going to be huge. We cannot wait to see a bigger representation of the monster come alive, especially since it’s such an iconic character. Did we mention the film has Millie Bobby Brown in it?

Watch if: The idea of witnessing the monster trash the city to bits is your idea of a good day

India’s Most Wanted – Release Date: 24 May

We’ll be honest here, this film is on the list just so we can see how the film is going to back up the huge claim it makes in the trailer. Starring Arjun Kapoor, the Bollywood flick joins the category of political thrillers, dramatized, fictional realities fit for Hindi cinema. It will be interesting to see how they fare with the subject of an elusive criminal and a crime-fighting non-violent band of officers.

Watch if: You haven’t figured out how Bollywood does fictional political trills

Student Of the Year 2 – Release Date: May 10

Bollywood is giving us another round of students battling it out in high-school. This is the version of high-school musical nobody asked for, but considering how huge the last film was at the box-office, our money is on this one pulling big numbers too. Prepare for lots of back-flips, campus fashion and love-triangles.

Watch if: An extravagant film to gawk over gets you to the movie theatre

Brightburn – Release Date: May 24

We’re both intrigued and a little unsettled by the idea of a superhero horror flick but will you check out that trailer? Full disclosure: Brightburn gives me chills and it subverts some of the most loved superhero film tropes. We’ve grown up on the tale of an alien boy coming down to the planet and then picking his battles, choosing between power’s evil pull and the kindness of his heart. This film explores the question; what if he picks the darkness?

Watch if: You love the idea of a rogue superhero

Rocketman – Release Date: May 31

Rocketman documents the colourful, brilliant career of Elton John, one of the biggest names in 20th-century American music. The musical fantasy will bring the glamour, struggle and fame to screen in an unadulterated on-screen representation of the legend’s life. This one if unskippable for music lovers.

Watch if: Music makes moves you like a tiny dancer

Ma – Release Date: May 31

Ma will give you the creeps. Picture this: a bunch of teenagers lured into a lonely woman’s home (basement to be precise) for nights of chaperone free parties. Teens letting lose in a strange space, what would go wrong? A lot according to this whacky trailer.

Watch if: You dare to think creepy Octavia Spencer isn’t real and cannot hurt you
