[Rumor] Alan Wake 2 to Be Published by Epic Games
Wake Up
Get some flashlight batteries and a good night’s sleep — a new rumor states that Alan Wake 2 is in development, and its publishing deal means that it could very well be an Epic Games Store exclusive at launch.
Alan Wake 2 was actually made to some degree more than five years ago; Polygon had a look at an unreleased version of the game that never completed production. Fans are still anxious for a sequel, though, and a new rumor from Jeff Grub states that it’s on the way. What’s even more interesting, however, is that he says it’s going to be published by Epic Games.
Will There Be an Alan Wake 2 Epic Games Store Exclusive Release?
As Epic Games is rumored to be the publisher of Alan Wake 2, the immediate question that comes to mind is whether or not this is going to be an Epic Games Store exclusive. Here’s What Jeff Grubb had to say about the game on his Twitch stream, highlighted on Twitter by Nibel:
"You know, Epic Games was doing that thing for a while where they were only buying exclusives of games that were already done. And everyone was like, 'I hate this, 'cause I like to use Steam,' (and I was one of those people). Epic, sort of — one of the ways they adjusted to that, one of the ways that they responded to that was, 'Well, let's just fund games as they are — before they're even started. Let's just fund games from the bottom up and give developers really good deals to make games that they want to make.
Well, they did that and one of the companies they did that with is Remedy. [...] I've heard that Remedy is going to be making Alan Wake 2 with Epic. And it should be a pretty... it should kind of be the follow-up the fans of that series want. So, Alan Wake — there was a bidding war, but Epic had the best publishing deal, and so Alan Wake 2, it seems like it's coming. I don't know exactly when they'll announce it, but this is what I've heard and I figured you guys could hear it here first."
Considering that Epic Games is reportedly publishing this game, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it launch as an Epic Games Store exclusive. Bear in mind that Epic Games announced it was publishing the next game from Remedy Entertainment last year, although what that game was had not yet been revealed. It reportedly shelled out over $10 million to get Control exclusively for its storefront, so a publishing deal is a natural next step and not all that unusual.
With a publishing deal already announced and Epic’s past relationship with Remedy Entertainment, the move to make Alan Wake 2 certainly would make sense. That said, this is a rumor that we can’t yet independently verify; as always, take it with a grain of salt.
