Companies like Apple and Google have been trying to get their foot in the door with regards to automotives by creating technologies like CarPlay and Android Auto. Neither company makes the hardware for it though, and instead rely on third-party companies to make the hardware while they supply the software.
However, it seems that Spotify wants in on the action – both hardware and software, and have announced their first hardware product, Car Thing. If you’re wondering why this sounds familiar, it is because the company was first rumored to be developing Car Thing since 2019. They later confirmed it to be true a few months later, and it seems that two years later, it is finally available.
Car Thing is essentially a little dashboard unit that lets you control and play your music through Spotify. From what we can tell, it looks like it just hooks into the vents of your car’s air conditioning unit, suggesting that it is very easy to install and will not require you to take your car to a mechanic to get it hooked up.
At the moment, Spotify says that Car Thing will only be available in the US and even then, it will be limited in its availability. As for pricing, during this limited release, Spotify’s Car Thing will actually be free of charge (you only need to pay for shipping). This is because the company sees it as an experiment, so if you’re interested in giving Car Thing a try, head on over to Spotify’s website and leave your email address for a chance to be selected.
