It will be quite the understatement if I say that the first season of Sacred Games, based on Vikram Chandra’s novel, was excellent. Given how I had grown up watching Indian TV shows that were either inclined towards the comedy genre or unrealistic soap-opera, it was quite surprising to see that we’re capable of creating engaging drama that is a critique of our country’s history and present condition and enjoy its nuances as well. It had some of the best performances from actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saif Ali Khan and Radhika Apte, crisp writing and direction by Anurag Kashyap, Neeraj Ghaywan, Varun Grover and Vikramaditya Motwane, a banging score, and a cliff-hanger that made every viewer fall off their seat. And now we’ve got a glimpse of what’s going to happen after that.
The first trailer for Sacred Games Season 2 starts off with Jatin Sarna’s Bunty and Shalini Vatsa’s Kanta Bai getting a call from Ganesh Gaitonde himself getting transported to Pankaj Tripathi’s Guruji. We see multiple glimpses of Gaitonde rising like a star under the guidance of Guruji, while tripping on various kinds of drugs. The trailer cuts to present day to show a scarred Sartaj trying to make sense of the bunker that he had discovered in Season 1 and probably the location of nuclear bombs that are supposed to go off in a few days. However, by the looks of it, his investigation eventually leads him to Guruji’s where he is likely drugged as well to stop him from ruining the cult’s plan to restructure India.
It is apparent that Sacred Games Season 2 is going to feature a lot of Tripathi’s Guruji, which will undoubtedly be a treat to watch because he is such a brilliant actor. The series will also feature new faces like Ranvir Shorey’s Shahid Khan and Kalki Koechlin’s Batya Abelman. However, what will be interesting to see is how the link between Sartaj and Gaitonde is further explored through the fractured narrative that the show has perfected.
