On Monday, Qualcomm and Tencent officially announced that they will be collborating on projects that can improve Tencent’s gaming performance on Qualcomm-powered smartphones. The companies have also announced plans to add 5G to ASUS ROG Phone II. Such faster network connectivity can allow Tencent to launch their own game streaming service, Instant Play.

Qualcomm is one of the largest suppliers of mobile phone chips that power numerous Android devices. And, with Tencent being one of the world’s largest gaming companies, the two tech giants can collaborate for developing games that are better optimized for smartphones powered by Snapdragon processors.

Qualcomm and Tencent have already worked together to develop a gaming phone. Recently, Tencent had worked with Asustek Computer’s gaming division named Republic of Gamers, to develop a gaming phone with a Qualcomm SoC.

Tencent and Qualcomm have also planned to develop a 5G version of the gaming phone, ASUS ROG Phone II. With faster network connections, gaming phones can stream more complex games that require a high bandwidth. Using 5G connections, Tencent can also simplify streaming games on their cloud-based back-end service called Instant Play. This gaming service will be similar to the ones launched by Google and Microsoft.

The cooperation agreement between Qualcomm and Tencent could also allow tweaking of game titles for laptops in US that are powered by Qualcomm’s processors. Such an agreement can enable laptops to be connected to the internet with 5G instead of conventional Wi-Fi chips.

As quoted by Reuters, Qualcomm China Chairman, Frank Meng, seems to be positive in his statements about the agreement, “Mobile gaming, an important 5G use case, will soon take advantage of the next generation of connectivity.” He also added that, “Faster speeds, more bandwidth, and cutting edge ultra-low latency will support real-time, multi-player and immersive gaming experience.”

Qualcomm and Tencent can work together to develop games that offer smoother gameplay on devices that are powered by Qualcomm. And, with better wireless connections like 5G, Tencent and Qualcomm can revolutionize the gaming experience and introduce a high-end streaming service. Such a collaboration will also improve Snapdragon Elite Gaming Enhancements, augmented reality and virtual reality use cases for gaming, and other gaming-related technologies. However, we still have to wait and watch other aspects of gaming that will be improved by this agreement.
